📌 Welcome (and thank you)

As 2025 blossoms, we find ourselves in a strange place culturally.

No longer do works of fiction and entertainment look to innovate and shine a path toward the future, instead they look to the past for answers. Ideas and innovations are similarly mired in a nostalgia or adherence to things which have already happened. Sokal Nouveau once stood as a beacon of light against such things.

For those who don’t know or don’t recall, Sokal Nouveau was a multidisciplinary academic journal. Highly influential at the point of its inception (albeit less so as academic trends shifted over the years), it was published monthly from 1962-2000 and then quarterly until it ceased publication in 2012. Over this time period it received support and contributions from such luminaries as Roland Barthes, Edward Pemberton, Umberto Eco, Pierre Kaufman, Penelope Pumpencof and Cordelia Anstruther-Baines.

Naturally, I first discovered the journal while at university. A keen academic studying a MSc in Semiotics at the University of Edinburgh, I found the ideas insightful, the writing engaging, and the varied contents awe inspiring.

Upon graduating in 2010, the journal become a mere afterthought; no longer relevant as I left the world of academia behind. Truth be told, I wasn’t even aware it had ceased publication until, browsing Reddit, I saw this post from 2020 asking if anyone remembered an article from the journal discussing the cultivation of agoraphobia brought on by an imagined pandemic. Obsessive at times, I soon found myself combing the internet for PDFs or any trace of the journal and found none. This led me to create my own post asking if anyone had an editions of the journal which they would be willing to part with. Cue my unknown benefactor:

Six boxes packed with volumes from throughout its 50-year print-run (pictured) arrived at my door with no warning. Unpacking these boxes felt like stepping into a time capsule: each issue brimmed with insightful articles that reflected the intellectual zeitgeist of its era, challenging readers to engage with esoteric ideas that remain relevant today. Recognising their enduring value, a small number of volunteers have embarked on a mission to preserve and share the knowledge contained within these pages.

The arrival of these journals serves as a reminder of the fragility of academic knowledge, and as we work through these boxes, the responsibility we have to preserve the intellectual achievements of the past has become more and more apparent. These journals are more than just academic artefacts; they represent the spirit of enquiry and the pursuit of knowledge that defines us as humans. By digitising and sharing them, we honour the authors, thinkers, and editors who shaped these ideas—and ensure their legacy endures for generations to come.

Stay tuned for updates as we delve deeper into this project.

Our collection is far from complete, so if you have access to any articles or volumes which you feel are suitable for inclusion please contact us. Together, we can preserve the legacy of Sokal Nouveau and make its invaluable academic contributions accessible to the world once more.
